On International Jazz Day on Thursday 30 April at Seven Arts we
celebrate the music of Stevie Wonder with music from the classic 1973
album "Innervisions" performed by the Chapel FM Jazz Collective
conducted by Dave Evans.
The music includes a wide range of themes and issues, from drug abuse
in "Too High", through inequality and racism in "Living for the City",
to love in the ballads "All in Love Is Fair" and "Golden Lady". "Living
for the City" was one of the first soul music songs to deal explicitly
with systemic racism and to incorporate everyday sounds of the street,
such as traffic, voices, and sirens.
Dave Evans has a long association with the Chapel FM Jazz Collective
going back to the days when that band was based at Garforth as the
Garforth Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra. Today their home is the Chapel FM
Arts Centre in Seacroft and CJC is a unique combination of established
musicians and younger artists seeking to learn from playing in a big
band format.
As well as the music of Innervisions the concert will also include
other huge hit compositions by Stevie Wonder where Dave will invite
Leeds musicians to come and join the band.
